Concrete is a very popular material used in building structures. Its popularity is due to its sustainable and versatile nature. According to concrete professionals, the process of creating concrete does have some challenges and certain problems can sometimes occur during the concreting process, both during and after.
1 – Discolored concrete
Whether building a driveway, a patio, or sidewalk contractors strive to achieve the best-using concrete. Discoloration of concrete occurs when dark patches occur due to improper installation techniques. The stain can also be caused by other agents such as automobile fluids.
If you notice discoloration on your concrete take agent action as it can spread and make the concrete slab look unappealing. Use diluted vinegar and a stiff brush to scrub off the affected areas and stop them from spreading further. If the case is severe, look for stronger chemicals such as hydrochloric acid. 2 – Cracks
Cracks on concrete slab sometimes may mean something has not been done right. Cracks start at the top of the slab and spread to the bottom over time. While building using the concrete slab ensure the cracks do not reach the bottom as it can cause great damage and force you to replace the whole slab. Fill in small cracks using a concrete filler and later apply a sealant product to strengthen the repaired part. A way to reduce the risk of serious cracks is to ensure the ground is prepared properly before the concrete.
3 – Curling
Concrete can be distorted into a curved shape by an upward and downward bending of the edges. a process is also known as curling. This occurs due to the difference in moisture and temperature of the top and the bottom surface. To avoid this occurrence, concrete contractors should use appropriate curling techniques. The concrete joints should be placed correctly and use low water content to avoid curling. Proper bonding should also be achieved when applying thin topping mixes and steel reinforcement should not be used in excess.
Other concrete problems include buckling which is caused by large trees on the property. The large roots that grow under the concrete may cause it to buckle and split up. Improper mixing and curing can also cause crazing. Crazing is tiny cracks on the surface of the concrete. Although crazing does not pose an adverse effect to the concrete slab it reduces its aesthetic value.
Concrete problems can be solved through regular monitoring and inspection. During the building process, concrete contractors should ensure everything is done according to standard measures and procedures. Structures made of concrete should be inspected once per year and after harsh weather, occurrence to ensure there are no cracks that can cause major damage.
